Toilet repair & replacement
Constant running, weak flushes, leaks at the base, or a toilet that won’t stop blocking. Repairs and replacements.
Common toilet faults
- Constantly running or refilling: usually a worn flush valve seal or a faulty fill valve. Hard water wears both faster.
- Weak or partial flush: often limescale, a tired flush mechanism, or the water level set too low.
- Water around the base: a failed pan connector or seal, or a cracked pan.
- Slow-filling cistern: often limescale or debris in the fill valve.
- Blocked toilet: usually wipes or too much paper, sometimes further down the drain.
Running toilets cost you money
A toilet that runs into the pan all day wastes water you’ll pay for if you’re on a meter. It’s usually a quick fix, so don’t leave it.
New toilets
We remove the old toilet and fit the new one, with new connections and waste. We’ll check that the new toilet suits your existing soil pipe position before you buy.
Getting to know your toilet
Most toilets have the same few working parts. The fill valve lets water into the cistern and shuts off when it’s full. The flush valve or siphon releases the water into the pan when you flush. A seal or washer stops water passing between the two. The pan connector joins the toilet to the soil pipe behind it.
There’s usually an isolation valve on the pipe feeding the cistern, with a screw slot you can turn a quarter-turn to shut off the water to that toilet only. Turning that off is the first thing to do if a cistern overflows or a toilet leaks at the base.
Concealed cisterns and wall-hung toilets
Many newer bathrooms hide the cistern behind a panel or a false wall, with only the flush plate showing. The parts inside are much the same, but getting to them depends on how the panel was built. Usually there’s access through the flush plate opening. If yours was boxed in without access, let us know when you call so we can plan for it.
Questions
Can a toilet be fixed in one visit?
Many fill and flush valve faults are straightforward repairs, though some toilets need specific parts. Tell us the make when you call, if you know it.
Is a leak at the base serious?
Yes. Water around the base can soak into the floor underneath, so turn off the isolation valve on the cistern feed and call us.
Can I flush wet wipes marked ‘flushable’?
We’d avoid it. Wipes are one of the most common causes of the blockages we clear.
