Knowle’s homes and their plumbing

Knowle was one of Bristol’s first garden-suburb council estates after the First World War. The council bought the land in 1920 and had finished more than 650 homes by 1927. After a century of repairs and alterations, the plumbing behind the walls can vary a lot from one house to the next.

In houses of that age, it’s worth knowing what your supply pipe is made of. Bristol Water says homes built before the 1970s could have lead pipework. The stretch from your stop tap into the house is the owner’s responsibility. If you’re having other plumbing done, it’s a sensible time to check.

Like the rest of the area, Knowle gets moderately hard to very hard water, so limescale is behind many stiff taps, slow-filling cisterns and tired appliance valves.

Plumbing in a century-old estate

A house that’s around a hundred years old has usually been through several kitchens, a few bathrooms, perhaps an extension and a loft conversion. Each change leaves its mark on the plumbing. Pipework gets extended, rerouted and joined in different materials, and the stop tap can end up somewhere unexpected, behind a newer kitchen unit or under a boxed-in section of floor.

If you’ve recently moved to Knowle, it’s worth spending ten minutes finding your stop tap, checking that it turns, and looking at what the pipe going into it is made of. If you’re planning a kitchen or bathroom change, think early about where the water supply and the waste will run. Moving a sink or toilet a few feet can change the job more than you’d expect, especially where the waste needs a fall to reach the drain.

Outside, many Knowle homes have front and back gardens with gullies and inspection chambers that are easy to forget about until something backs up. Lifting a manhole cover now and then to check that water is flowing freely is a simple way to catch a slow drain early.
